The Tiny House Movement

What are tiny houses? The tiny house movement? Tiny living?

Simply, it is a movement where people are choosing to downsize the space they live in. The typical American home is around 2,600 square feet, whereas the typical small or tiny house is between 100 and 400 square feet. Tiny houses come in all shapes, sizes, and forms, but they enable simpler living in a smaller, more efficient space.

People are joining this movement for many reasons, but the most popular reasons include environmental concerns, financial concerns, and the desire for more time and freedom.

Q: How and why did Tiny Houses Hartville, LLC get started with building tiny houses?

Mary: Tiny Houses Hartville started after a long 7yr discussion. In 2009 we went to visit friends who live in Mississippi and even tho it was 4yrs after Hurricane Katrina, there was still major damages and people living in Katrina Homes. Katrina Homes are tiny houses that are up on stilts. We discussed how awesome it would be and how much more efficient it would be to build these right here in Ohio. Well we all know how Ohio is always behind on movements, so the thought of building tiny houses would have to wait. The thought of it stayed there for years and then the movement seemed to be picking up steam toward the midwest. After blogs and research the dream of build a more efficient, environmentally, simpler way of living, came to life! That was the beginning of Tiny Houses Hartville.

Q: Can someone have a custom tiny home built?

Mary: Yes someone can have a custom one built. We are currently doing some drawings for potential clients.

Q: What advice would you give someone who is considering buying their own tiny house? What are the benefits of a tiny house?

Mary: Make sure you are ready for the change. You really have to downsize your whole life, but how freeing it would be to be able to enjoy life and not just stuff. The benefits of going tiny is that you can enjoy more of what life has to offer. In a larger home, you tend to be tied down with the maintenance and cleaning. In a tiny house the maintenance is on a smaller scale and the clean up is a breeze. You can also reduce your carbon footprint on the environment. That is our goal! We would like to build a pocket neighborhood with a community garden, solar panels, rain barrels etc.

We live in a 5th wheel camper because we travel for Eric’s work. It is a different reason than people who choose tiny houses. And I totally see the benefits of both ways of living. I don’t believe down sizing your life is for everyone, but I totally believe this is an amazing movement! PLUS… these tiny houses are SUPER cute!
